When the series begins, Clay Morrow is the president of SAMCRO, but he knows his time his limited due to severe arthritis in his hands that will soon prevent him from riding. If he can't ride, he can't rule. He hides the extent of his pain from everyone except his wife Gemma, who gives him injections to help him cope. Because Clay knows he will have to step down soon, he makes many moves with an eye toward his legacy and that of the club. He believes the club's future, and financial security, is in gun running, a subject on which he has some disagreement from his step-son, Jax.Clay relies heavily on Bobby for guidance, although Clay listens to him less and less as he becomes more secretive about his dealings.Like many members of the club, Clay has a violent history and is known to be responsible for at least a few murders during the SAMCRO-Mayan war in the early 90s. Clay has no problem seeing killing as a tactical move, or for intimidation or retribution, but he usually thinks through the consequences before acting.He has a longstanding uneasy friendship with the police chief Wayne Unser, who is on his payroll. Clay is deeply in love with his wife, Gemma, but isn't always faithful to her, or patient, and he seems to see her less of an equal than he once did, keeping her more on the outside of his machinations.Background: Clay was born in 1949 and has lived in Charming for more than three decades. Youngest of the First 9 who started the northern California chapter in 1968, including Piney and Keith. He fought in Vietnam for three years as a member of the Army Airborne. He opened Teller-Morrow auto shop with John Teller, Jax's father. He and JT traveled to Northern Ireland in the mid-80s, where Clay made connections that allowed him to push for the club to get into more gun running back home, which JT opposed. He married JT's widow, Gemma Teller in the mid-90s and adopted her son, Jax.He has served time in prison.
